After a recent piece of news from Ming-Chi Kuo that confirmed that only the iPhone 14 Pro models will get the new Apple A16 Bionic, we have another source citing the same information. This time, the report comes from TrendForce revealing some of the details of the upcoming iPhone 14 series.
Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max Chipset
The report corroborates that the vanilla iPhone models for this year i.e., the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will come powered by the same A15 chipset. However, unlike last year, the vanilla models will have more RAM. Both phones will come in 6GB LPDDR4X RAM options. Currently, the iPhone 13 has 4GB of RAM.
Apple iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max Chipset
On the other hand, the iPhone 14 Pro models including the iPhone 14 Pro Max will come with the new Apple A16 chipset. Both are expected to have 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM.
While this news corroborates Kuo’s leak, it is quite not entirely the same as what the analyst stated. As per the new report, the A16 will be made by TSMC on the 4nm node, however, contrary to it, Kuo had previously revealed that Apple will stick to the 5nm node for this year’s A16 chipset. He further stated that this name change could only be for marketing purposes to spur sales.
Although we believe that the A16 will stick to only the Pro models, while A15 to be stacked inside the vanilla iPhone 14s, we aren’t quite sure about the fabrication process of the former chipset. However, it’s most likely that the A16 will stick to the 5nm node, as TSMC itself shared its silicon processes release timeline, and the significantly better 4nm and 3nm fabrication processes are said to go into mass production in 2023. So, the 2023 iPhone models will likely have the better 4nm fab chipset.
Apple iPhone 14 series other specs (expected)
Other than the chipset, some of the specs of the phone have also been listed. The iPhone 14 will likely come with a 6.1-inch display, 12MP dual-camera system, and have up to 512GB of internal storage. The iPhone 14 Max will get a larger 6.7-inch screen with the same 12MP dual-camera system and up to 512GB of storage.
The iPhone 14 Pro will feature a 6.1-inch screen, while the Pro Max will have a 6.7-inch display. Both are expected to come with a 48MP triple camera system and will have up to 1TB of storage. The Pros will pack a frame made out of Steel, while the vanilla models will have an Aluminum frame.
Pricing and Launch timeline of iPhone 14 series
In terms of pricing, the iPhone 14 Pro models are expected to start at $1,199, while the vanilla iPhones could launch at under $1000.
Just like every year, the iPhone 14 series will debut sometime in September or October. But a new piece of the news suggests that the series may debut on September 12 or September 13. The phones will be available for pre-booking immediately after the launch, with shipments expected to start in early October.
