Display and Design

The segment in which these devices come is mostly renowned for great built quality. Nothing too premium and not too cheap. The same is the case with the duo, the Mi 10i 5G from Xiaomi comes in a glass built with hard Gorilla Glass 5 protection at the rear as well as at the front. On the other hand, the Galaxy M42 from the M-series, which is infamous for its plastic built is yet again back with the polycarbonate plastic design. Even though it is plastic, the phone doesn’t feel cheap from the looks, thank to the layered design at the rear.

The major advantage of the plastic built has to be its weight. The Galaxy M42 5G has a body weighing about 190 grams which is way lighter than the 215 grams weight of the Mi 10i 5G. The smartphones boast a large display with a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED panel on the M42 5G and a 6.67-inch IPS LCD display on the Mi 10i 5G.

While displays are big, the resolution on the M42 5G is a bummer. It comes with an HD+ resolution(720 x 1600 pixels) as compared to the Full-HD+(1080 x 2400 pixels) resolution on the Mi 10i 5G. The pixel density on the Samsung is another led-down as it boasts 266 PPI over the 395 PP pixel density on Xiaomi.

One major difference between the two is the refresh rate. The Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G has a 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling rate, whereas, the M42 5G is stuck to 60Hz refresh rate and standard touch sampling rate.

Cameras on the Samsung Galaxy M42 5G and Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G

The phones feature a quadruple-camera system but the setup on the Mi 10i 5G is goes beyond what the Galaxy M42 5G offers. The Mi 10i 5G has a 108MP primary lens, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle unit, a 2MP macro lens, and lastly a 2MP depth sensor. On the other hand, the M42 5G has a 48MP main sensor, an 8MP wide-angle lens, a 5MP macro lens, and a 5MP depth sensor.

As for the front, on-paper, the M42 5G leads with its 20MP selfie camera over the 16MP on the Mi 10i 5G. The phones support Electronic Image Stabilization(EIS) and can shoot 4K videos at up to 60fps.

Hardware and Software

Moving to the hardware, both phones come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G chipset. It is also the major reason behind the comparison considering the chipset offers 5G connectivity and for a market like India, having a 5G phone is basically future-proofing the usage.

The octa-core chipset is based on an 8nm process which is way efficient than the counterparts. It has Adreno 619 GPU and is paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage on both phones. The difference lies in the storage type, the M42 5G has a UFS 2.1 internal storage, whereas, the Mi 10i 5G has UFS 2.2 onboard storage. Both phones have a microSD card slot for additional storage.

In terms of battery, the M42 5G leads with its 5,000mAh big battery. The Mi 10i 5G houses a slightly smaller 4,820mAh cell with 33W fast charging technology. One thing to remember is that the M42 5G’s bigger battery supports only 15W speed for charging.

The juicing can be done with the help of a USB Type-C port at the bottom on both the phones. The 3.5mm headphone jack is also present on the phones. Xiaomi’s Mi 10i 5G gets an additional IR Blaster which the Galaxy M42 5G misses out on.

As for security, the Samsung Galaxy M42 5G leaps thanks to its in-display fingerprint scanner. Xiaomi on the other hand makes use of a side-mounted fingerprint sensor solution.

The Mi 10i 5G boots on MIUI 12 based on Android 11, whereas, the M42 5G runs on Samsung’s One UI on top of Android 11.

  1. Hd+ in 2020 is a downside at this price range🤢 there is no comparison between these two if we consider displays first!!

    Btw nice informative article👏🏻

  2. M42 is a deal breaker for me because of the display. There is no way I am going to buy a phone with 720p display in 2021. If they had provided a 1080p one, it would be great.
