Netflix, the video streaming platform, announced a price cut of up to 60% in its membership services.

Since its inception in 2016 in India Netflix offers subscription plans starting from 500 INR.

Netflix has failed to gain popularity with price-conscious Indian subscribers. Netflix has only gained an estimated 5 million members in the nation, compared to 46 million subscribers to the Disney Hotstar network and 19 million subscribers to Amazon Prime Video. To increase its subscription base they had launched a mobile-only  199rs plan in July 2019

Netflix once again has revised its plans, the new plans, dubbed “Happy New Prices” by the corporation, will go into effect on December 14, 2021.

  • The Netflix Mobile plan, which was previously priced at Rs. 199 per month, has been reduced by 25% to Rs. 149 per month.
  • The most significant discounts are in store for the Basic Netflix plan, which was previously available for Rs. 499 per month but will now be accessible for Rs. 199.
  • The standard plan has been reduced from Rs. 649 per month to Rs. 499 per month.
  •  The most costly Premium plan, which includes Ultra HD material and capability for four screens, is now priced at Rs 649 per month, instead of Rs 799 per month.

It is to be noted that the resolution remains the same 480p for Mobile and Basic plan while 1080p and 4k HDR for the Standard & Premium plan respectively.

So far, Netflix has debuted 70 originals in India, with another 70 in the works. They are trying to produce as many India-specific original shows as possible.  Aided by growing internet usage in India, streaming services experienced a boost from the epidemic, which drove many to stay indoors for weeks and forced movie theatres to close. This price reduction comes as new India-specific original shows are going to hit the app soon and some popular series is on the line.
