A proclivity for 5G phone manufacturers has always been the price to performance ratio. It is evident that having a budget 5G phone means losing on some of the standard features in order to balance out things. Either it’s the cameras, battery, or the display. Today, especially in the Indian market, the 5G phone market is mainly in the sub ₹20,000(~$270) range. Folks serious about future-proofing, arguably have to stretch their budget. Well, today, a 5G smartphone from the Chinese tech giant, Oppo has gone on sale in the Indian market. Oppo A53s 5G is claimed to be the cheapest 5G smartphone in the market that doesn’t cut on some essentials for the sake of providing 5G connectivity. Some of the major highlights of the Oppo A53s are triple rear cameras, MediaTek’s Dimensity chipset, and a big 5,000mAh battery.

Display and Design

The smartphone comes in a sleek 8.4mm thick body with a matte finish at the rear. It is a mix of polycarbonate and glass built with polycarbonate plastic at the rear and a 6.52-inch glass screen at the front. It is an IPS LCD panel with a resolution of Full-HD+ and a brightness of 480nits.

It is a water-drop notch panel with thin bezels on three of the sides but does have a thick bottom chin at the bottom. The phone maintains the modern 20:9 aspect ratio with 269 PPI pixel density.

Cameras on the Oppo A53s 5G

As for cameras, the smartphone offers a triple cameras at the rear and single camera at the front. The rear setup is pretty basic with a 13-megapixel primary lens with an aperture of f/2.2, a 2MP macro sensor with f2.4 aperture, and lastly a depth sensor with the same f/2.4 aperture.

The rear camera can shoot 1080p videos at up to 30fps and does support HDR for photos. The 8-megapixel sensor is placed with in the water-drop notch and it can click some wide shots with its 26mm focal length.

Hardware and Software

Under the hood, the A53s 5G powers one of the rarest chipset in the smartphone market, especially in India. The device rocks the MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset that supports 5G connectivity. It is an octa-core processor based on a 7nm process that has Mali-G57 GPU.

As said earlier, it is no ordinary 5G phone that we see in the current Indian market. The device comes with five 5G bands as compared to 2 or 1 bands which we find in most of the 5G devices available in the market. The bands include n1, n28, n41, n77, and n78.

Internally, it has a 5,000mAh big battery with support for 10W charging speed. It has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner for extra security. The phone supports Bluetooth v5.0, Wi-F- 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, and GPS. It has a 3.5mm headphone for audio and a USB Type-C port for data transfer and charging.

The smartphone boots on Android 11 out of the box with ColorOS 11.1. The dual-SIM phone has 6GB, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage.

Pricing and Colors

The Oppo A53s 5G starts at ₹14,990(~$203) for the base 6GB + 128GB variant and ₹16,990(~$230). For reference, the newly launched Samsung Galaxy M42 5G costs ₹21,999(~$298) which is way higher. Seems like, with A53s 5G, Oppo has already managed to market its presence as the cheapest 5G phone provider in the region.
